If you’re a local at The Brit Sports Pub & Patio, there’s a chance you may have hoisted a pint or two with the new owners, Mandeep and Jasbir Singh, without even knowing it.

Tech engineers, they were regulars who followed their passion and bought the English-themed sports bar on July 15. The pub won runner up for Best British Pub in the Metro San Jose Best of 2022 contest. 

“It’s a combination of pub and sports bar,” Singh said when asked to describe The Brit. “People come to eat and drink and have fun and enjoy fine dining. They come to watch sports, for the ambiance, the beer and spirits selection and the low prices. We cater to every genre.”

Since the takeover, the pub has been elevated to higher sports-pub status. What can sport fans and pub lovers expect? A bank of 25 TVs–there are three more coming as a shaded patio renovation takes shape and debuts in January 2023–that can show 10 to 15 kinds of competitions at once. Fans can watch hockey, baseball, the Grand Prix, basketball, boxing matches, prize fights and golf, plus American football and soccer–or just about any other sport imaginable.

Currently, the leading attraction may be the coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2022 from Qatar, with The Brit opening at 7 a.m. on game days to serve British and other breakfast items until noon. Irish bacon, black pudding, bangers, an omelet or side of imported meats, anyone? 

The Brit strives, Singh said, to be a cost-conscious, fun place for everyone with its own take on what a British pub in Silicon Valley ought to be. 

“We have everything,” he said. “We want to be a place for people to come in and have fun, for all genres. We want to be a place where customers come in and don’t have to think about high prices.”

If you’re hungry, The Brit has you covered with mouth-watering creations. The traditional British dishes include London Pride beer-battered fish and chips, shepherd’s pie made with ground lamb, bangers and mash with gravy, grilled chicken tikka with rice and salad and sticky toffee pudding and the Bazooka (a warm chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream) for dessert. Customers will also find good bar-food favorites, from burgers, chicken sandwiches and chicken wings to nachos, sliders, chicken strips and even mac ’n’ cheese and Brussels sprouts. Soups and salads round out the menu.  

Some menu standouts are the curry dishes, such as the exotic red curry (chicken on paneer), and the five specialty pizzas: cheese, pepperoni, curry veggies, chicken tikka and the supreme. The pizzas are personal-size pies, measuring 10 to 12 inches, so one is enough for a full meal or a snack to share. The base is house-made dough, and pie-lovers get to pick from three sauces: traditional, red curry or a garlic white.

The Brit keeps vegetarians in mind, too, and introduced a California veggie burger that’s popular with vegetarians who can’t get enough of the patty made of zucchini, potatoes, peas and carrots. 

“The customers love it,” Singh said, adding there also is fish and chips for vegetarians, using a Soya fishless filet.

The new Brit brought back happy hour, from 3-7 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding days with an event at SAP Center) and rolled back drink prices overall, Singh said. He suggested the daily duration of The Brit’s happy hour could be the longest in the South Bay. The Brit’s full bar stays open late (until 2 a.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays. (The Brit does not deliver but does offer carry out.)

A happy hour food menu (excluding events) lets people snack with their beverages at three price points: $6 for Brit pub chips, tater tots, skinny fries, seasoned curly fries or house-made tortilla chips; $7 for onion rings or sweet potato fries; and $10 for  Brit nachos, animal-style curry fries or a giant Bavarian pretzel. Most beers go for $6 for happy hour; otherwise, they are usually $8.50.

Beer lovers will cheer the 16 beers on tap from the likes of London, Ireland, Scotland and the San Francisco Bay Area, including London Pride, Guinness, Four Peaks Kilt Lifter, Drake’s Brewing Company and the Russian River Brewing Company and more. A pint-pour equals 25 ounces in a beer mug. Craft beers abound, too, with fruity Elysian Space Dust, hoppy Lagunitas IPA, fresh Canadian Molson, sunny Stone Dayfall Witbier and others. Don’t overlook the usual suspects of canned and bottled brews from Budweiser, Coors and Corona to Miller High Life and Michelob Ultra and other recognizable brands.

For wine connoisseurs, the Brit delivers varietals by the glass and bottle, pouring Chalk Hill chardonnay, Tribute cabernet, Erath pinot noir, Justin cabernet, Prisoner Red Blend, Prisoner Unshackled chardonnay, Bernardus sauvignon blanc, Coppola pinot grigio and Whisper Angel rose. Plus, The Brit uncorks bubbly by the bottle from Freixenet. 

Among the most popular drink specials are a Modelo or Bud Light pint and a Jameson shot for $12 every day. The Brit does pour extremely high-dollar tequilas(Clase Azul), bourbons and whiskeys, so don’t get the idea it’s only about budget shots and brews. San Jose Sharks fans like the “Sharkaritas,” margaritas named for the team that plays next door. The drink is blue, its hue seemingly lifted straight from a Sharks jersey. The Brit’s other specialty drinks–Tamarind Sour, Old Fashioned Brit, Old Cuban, Between the Sheets, Strawberry Fields,The Lilikoi, Tommy’s Margarita, Peach Daisy and CMG Smash–are sure to tempt the most discerning imbiber’s taste buds.

Not everything is new about The Brit. Singh noted that all existing staff members, about 30, from the prior ownership were kept on the payroll. The decor still features a mix of the familiar high-top table and chairs, low-top tables and chairs, and bar and barstool seating. The brick walls are adorned with tons of framed sports jerseys amid large-screen TVs, and the wall-papered walls above the booths add a little clubby distinction–and individual TVs tableside.

For those looking for a space to hold a holiday party, special event, sports-watching event or an after-work happy hour, The Brit can book a crowd of about 125 on the patio, perfect for those people who might want a little privacy. The Brit schedules trivia nights and DJs, too, for you and your mates to enjoy a bit of pubby community.

For the record, the new owners are big San Francisco 49ers fans and have held season passes for five years running, watching the team play at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Maybe you’ll see them there.

In recent years, local practice space Playback Studios began holding shows in their lobby to help keep live music active in the local underground. This year, the venue space received a notable upgrade, moving from the lobby to a dedicated live room upstairs with plenty of space for actual showgoers and a slew of important young bands coming through. The Center for Literary Arts offers the South Bay’s thriving literary arts scene a writerly hub with top-notch monthly programming. Part of the College of Humanities and Arts at San Jose State University, the CLA launched in 1989 and has since brought a breathtaking roster of authors to the area, counting five Nobel Prize winners and 29 Pulitzer Prize winners among its Major Authors Series speakers. While free public readings by such luminaries as novelist Amy Tan, playwright Tony Kushner, sci-fi legend Ursula K. Le Guin and poet Ocean Vuong are inspiring, the center also offers more intimate programming. The CLA Book Club, the Craft Lecture Series and the Friday Writers Group—which have taken place in a mixture of in-person and online formats since 2020—are for readers and writers alike. True to the organization’s mission of spreading “the influence of, and interest in, literature throughout the South Bay,” they provide compelling engagement with and reflection on the craft of writing.

Now in its 36th year, CLA draws some of the most celebrated writers in the country to San Jose. Highlighting just one of those coming in the near future, director Selena Anderson says she’s excited to present Hanif Abdurraqib on Feb. 23 at the Hammer Black Box Theater. “His book They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us is described as a collection of death-defying protest songs, a bellwether for our times,” Anderson says. “In these essays, Abdurraqib reflects on everything from Chance The Rapper and Nina Simone to Allen Iverson and Serena Williams, from summer crushes to the thrill of common joys in children. Myriad genres and mediums are represented, with surrealism, realism, illustration, sculpture, wearable art and much more gracing the walls and shelves. In fact, many feel it is the breadth of the gallery that makes it so special. Local artist Matty Heimgartner vouches: “Kaleid is my absolute favorite gallery because it is overstimulating in the best way. When I step into the creative space, all different trains of thought inside my mind are fed and entertained.” One of the most unique aspects of Kaleid is its monthly Two Buck Tuesday event, with mini-paintings, small pieces of jewelry and other petite treasures available for just $2. Amid a celebratory atmosphere, the artists come together on this night for music, live demos, workshops and more. The city of San Jose’s unique Willow Glen Children’s Theater program, which produces original plays for the young actors (ages 7 and up) in each new session, returned from Covid this year. Founded by Gavin Coffing in 1988 and now directed by Jordan Kilpatric—who herself acted in many WGCT productions in her pre-teen and teenage years—the program grows kids’ confidence and acting skills while finding parts (and great lines) for them in wildly creative original productions. Considering that very few stage opportunities exist for local kids outside of musical theater, this is a true gem that we’re lucky to have in Silicon Valley. Campbell Park is more than just a gateway to the magnificent Los Gatos Creek Trail. The park is always bustling with runners, hoopers and fitness boot-campers, but for many years it had been failing one of its biggest user groups: kids and their families. You know you’re in trouble when one of your premier playground features is “Look, this slide is built into the side of a weird hill!” But no more. After a few months of fencing off the play area with an impenetrable wrap that made the whole thing very mysterious, the new playground has been unveiled, and it’s a fun combination of forward-looking features and smart organic design with a natural look. A few of us might miss the death-trap merry-go-round and child-launching swing designs of old, but this place is like some kind of Swiss Family Robinson adventure set. Though it might not have downtown San Jose’s urban bustle, Santa Clara County’s southernmost metropolis has its own nightlife—and it’s getting livelier soon. On the same historic stretch where the old city hall sits—home of a restaurant called, unironically, Old City Hall (7400 Monterey St; 408.842-3454)—there are enough establishments to stage a bona fide bar crawl. The historic Milias Restaurant (7397 Monterey Hwy; 408.337.5100) has a legendary whiskey selection and Promised Land Brewing Co. (7419 Monterey St; 408.337.5444) kicked off a craft brew juggernaut. Bartenders Union (7421 Monterey St; 408.337.5886) offers 20 constantly changing craft brews on tap, plus music and pool. The District Theater (7430 Monterey St; 408.767.2775) books live bands, DJs and comedians. Adding food to the mix is upscale newcomer Tempo Kitchen & Bar (7560 Monterey St; 408.855.1111), serving up Gilroy Garlic Flatbread and more to accompany melodically named cocktails like Smoke on the Water and Purple Haze. Monterey Street is set to get more crowded with the arrival of more than five new breweries and taprooms. Settle Down Beer (7515 Monterey St) is close to opening in one one of the many buildings along the corridor that has undergone seismic retrofits. And though its opening date is still fluid, Pour Me Taproom (7499 Monterey Rd; 408.440.6481) is already posting regularly on social media and soon will be introducing Gilroyans to “the best locally sourced beers from some of the most amazing craft breweries you might have never heard of.” These brewing developments should help to draw locals and tourists alike to Gilroy’s Gourmet Alley, which stretches from Third to Seventh streets. —Sharan Street

When it comes to cuisine, why can’t vegans around here have nice things? There’s no denying that up ’til now, the best outposts for vegan eating in Silicon Valley have been cool hole-in-the-wall spots—which is all well and good, except that vegans like fine dining, too. Thankfully, after three years of success in San Francisco, the people behind Wildseed opened a restaurant in March at Palo Alto’s Town and Country Village shopping center (in the space previously occupied by Mayfield Bakery and Café). Everything from the flatbreads to the burgers to the meatballs (er, neatballs) is 100% plant-based, and the menu is a mix of delicious, complex flavors from around the world. As of Dec. 31, celebrated chef David Kinch will no longer be at the helm of Manresa—perhaps a moot point for those average Janes who can’t throw down black cards at his triple Michelin-starred Los Gatos restaurant. But Kinch’s empire is very much alive, including the far more affordable Manresa Bread, which he operates with head baker Avery Ruzicka. Founded in 2015, the bakery has expanded its footprint this year, opening in June at Palo Alto’s Town & Country Village and a new and larger location in Los Gatos on Oct. 27. Located at 40 N. Santa Cruz Ave, the 1,400-square-foot flagship is an all-day café with indoor and outdoor seating, In addition to Ruzicka’s house-milled sourdough breads and laminated pastries, Manresa serves up epic lunch fare: pretzel ham and cheese croissant, salmon toast (topped by a mountain of curly frisee) and the obligatory avocado toast (similarly heaped with greens). Efforts to crowdsource the perfect South Bay burrito—slightly crunchy on the outside, majorly juicy on the inside, packing a punch of flavor and freshness inside its foil wrapper—often end up with the same answer: La Victoria Taquería. Back in 1998, students at San Jose State knew the chain as La Vic’s. Today, what started as a humble family business targeting undergrads has conquered the city, with five locations in San Jose and one in Hayward (a brand-new, larger venue that opened in April). Online ordering is also an option, but doing so forgoes the all-important experience of choosing a favorite location. Mid-century Mexico City, where mirrored walls, peach hues, high tables and open floorplans? Or a renovated Victorian home? Checkered floor, or soothing wood? These questions matter when discussing one’s connection to this beloved South Bay institution. Of course, the meat of the matter is the food itself. With extremely reasonable prices and hours at most locations stretching from 7am to 3am, it’s feasible to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and midnight snack there. There are five acres of ancient Egypt to explore in the heart of San Jose. Whether one wanders in by the Planetarium off Park Avenue, the Grand Temple off Randol or the Peace Garden on Chapman Street, the Rosicrucian Park—which surrounds the buildings of the famous Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and the headquarters of the Rosicrucian Order—is sure to stir one’s sense of the mystical. While the museum’s hours are limited to the weekend, the park is free and open daily from 8am until sunset. Variety makes this park special. Deep within, kids can find plenty of themed fun, including a life-size version of an ancient board game called senet. Adults will enjoy the sheer tranquility, with a labyrinth surrounded by Mesopotamian grasses and a central fountain encouraging meditation. A tiered fountain’s waters plume and fall peacefully as a drum circle beats on in the distance. Couples nestle in nooks of pastel blooms. Soothing lines of sunlit rose bushes stretch on and on—for 5.5 acres, to be exact. This is San Jose’s Municipal Rose Garden, a botanical gem and the perfect place to slow down, regroup and—it must be said—stop and smell the roses. The Rose Garden’s official groundbreaking was in 1931. Once a prune orchard, today it specializes in one thing and one thing only. The grassy lawn features more 4,000 bushes and 189 rose varieties, including new hybrids that the All American Rose Selections organization tests at the garden before releasing to the public. At every turn, a new shade steals the show: variegated white and pink, bold red, deep violet, and a yellow that can only be described as that of Belle’s ball gown in Beauty and the Beast. A detailed map provides official names: Gold Struck, Moondance, Pink Flamingo and scores more. Elegant, slightly whimsical and unfurling in majestic waves throughout the year, these roses are creatures to be cherished. Airfield prides itself on being a “vertically integrated company,” he said, referring to the strategy of streamlining operations through taking direct ownership of production stages, instead of only relying on external contractors or suppliers. One result is its two award-winning, in-house, craft-grown, small-batch lines — Aviation Cannabis and Jetfuel Cannabis made from cannabis grown on-site at Airfield in San Jose. 

Aviation, launched in 2021, features single-source, premium, whole-bud cannabis flower, cured resin vapes, and fresh concentrates in “the most recyclable packaging materials available to the industry today,” according to Airfield materials.

“We also spend a massive amount of time sourcing and partnering on new third-party products,” Matulich said, “as well as finding the right partners who meet our quality standards. We are always looking to find the next great thing.” To that extent, Airfield Supply joined the Gold Flora family of companies this year — offering customers further access to premium products and also kick-starting expansion as a part of its retail network across California. 

In-store, as well as on the company’s well-designed website, customers can choose products to fit a variety of needs. “Destinations” Energy (including Jetfuel’s Lightning Jack), Create (including Up North Pineapple Trainwreck), Focus (including Gold Flora’s White Gold 2:1 CBD-rich disposable vape), Euphoria (including Raw Garden’s Lemon Oz – Diamonds), Relax (including Papa & Barkley’s ReLeaf Balm, Sleep (including Aviation’s Wedding Cake cannabis), Arouse (including Quim’s Night Moves Intimate Oil), and Relief (including Level ProTab 1:1), have something for everyone, said Matulich.

Airfield’s own product lines are “flower-driven,” he said, and overall the dispensary’s product selection covers a wide range of forms, including flower, pre-roll, edible, vape, concentrate, beverage, tincture, topical, CBD, and pills and capsules. Gear, glass and accessories are also available.

The website’s blog is designed to educate and entertain on topics such as “endocannabinoids” and “microdosing.” Said chief marketing officer Chris Lane, “We put a lot of focus on education, both with our staff and with customers. And we get a lot of important feedback from them that drives our product development and purchasing strategies.”

While same-day and next-day delivery is available across San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Campbell and many other the South Bay cities, on-site visits to Airfield are both educational and fun. Budtenders, known as the “Flight Crew,” are highly knowledgeable, “and take your shopping to new heights,” according to the website. Between 1,000 and 1,500 shoppers visit each day, Lane said, and they often find, in addition to the range of products, unique events designed “to make each visit a center of experience and energy,” he said.

Airfield recently hosted the Select Oil Arcade Truck, with two claw machines, and a “photo-worthy backdrop” allowing participants to document their experience. Prizes such as rolling trays, shirts, hats, key chains, car fresheners, lanyards, lighters, and stickers could be won by enthusiastic players. Lane noted that Airfield often hosts celebrity meet-and-greets, such as a recent event with NFL star Ricky Williams.

To ensure there is always something new to explore, Airfield launched “The Hanger”in 2020, a special rotating shopping activation space where customers can learn about products and brands in deeper depth, said Lane, watch short videos, and attend product showcases or educational events. “We work hard to offer a consistent schedule of specials, and exclusive, limited-edition products,” he said. 

Matulich emphasized that Airfield, from its founding as South Bay Healing Center, has continued its “love of being a part of the San Jose community. We continue to engage with each individual, and offer everything we can to help them embrace their day.”
