British electronic act Disclosure is very of the moment, but members Guy and Howard Lawrence come from a diverse musical background. Their father played in various rock bands, and their mother worked as a session musician, sang advertising jingles, and even performed for the British Army. This background provided the Lawrence Brothers with the perfect musical education. They started Disclosure in 2010 and quickly scored a record deal for their fresh mix of pop structures and electronic grooves. Since then, Disclosure has taken the electronic and house scene by storm. Not only has Disclosure been nominated for eight Grammy Awards and four BRIT Awards, but the duo’s single “Latch” featuring Sam Smith recently passed 1 billion streams.

In the early 2000s, the band Simon Dawes, formed by high school friends Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills, brought a Malibu flavor to the solidifying indie rock sound. Once Mills left, it reformed as simply Dawes featuring Taylor Goldsmith and his brother Griffin. It also ditched the “indie” label and settled into a more folk sound, keeping that ocean breeze but incorporating a Laurel Canyon flavor. With each successive release, Dawes’ sound becomes more enigmatic, taking pop sensibilities and flipping them upside down, or at least, sideways with introspective lyrics. The group released the album Oh Brother last year, resulting in an inviting but slightly demanding address to the modern world, full of great melodies.

Eladio Carrión is one of the most exciting names in Latin music. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, but raised all over, Carrión picked up different sights and sounds before his family settled in Puerto Rico when he was 11. He made his name as a comedian and social media personality before transitioning into music full-time. Carrión rose in profile thanks to collaborations with top Latin artists and a collection of songs that showcased his effortless blending of Latin trap, reggaeton and hip-hop. Not only did he win the Latin Grammy for Best Rap/Hip Hop song, Carrión has racked up 5 billion views on YouTube and another 5.1 billion streams across streaming platforms.

If the name Johnny Pemberton sounds familiar, it’s probably because he’s one of the most prolific young character actors working in Hollywood today. While he’s best known for playing Bo on NBC’s Superstore, he’s had roles in movies like 21 Jump Street, Neighbors 2, Ant Man, and television shows like Kroll Show, Law & Order: SVU, Bob’s Burgers, Adventure Time and The New Girl. Putting these great roles aside, Pemberton is also hilarious on his own two feet. Not only is he an instinctually funny physical comedian, Pemberton lets conventional bits spiral into the absurd, but not so far that he loses his grasp on reality. Performances go until Saturday.

Since the creation of hip-hop in the ’70s, the genre has developed regionally. The SF Bay Area scene refined that regionalism to an impressive degree, and no group embodies the Bay’s own thing more than RBL Posse. Founded in 1991 in SF’s Hunter’s Point, the group reached instant success with the self-produced “Don’t Give Me No Bammer Weed.” Though RBL Posse followed up with further successful records, tragedy followed as well. Founding member Mr. Cee was shot and killed in 1996, and another member, Hitman, was killed in 2003. Despite these setbacks, founding member Black C continues to keep the name and legacy of RBL Posse alive.

Smooth but provocative, harmonious but rebellious, alternative band Molotov has made waves since appearing on the Mexican music scene in the mid-90s. Founded by two friends, the group quickly added more and began developing a solid underground reputation. Once they signed with Universal Music Latin Entertainment, Molotov truly took Mexico by storm. Almost like a Latin answer to America’s ’90s rap-rock phenomenon, the group mixed genres and languages. Though Molotov faced censorship early in its history, they simultaneously became well-regarded for their lyrical content that poked fun at and offered criticism towards the Mexican government. Now, three decades on, Molotov remains critically acclaimed, and one of the best-selling Latin rock bands of all time.

Directed by the King of Cult Cinema, Roger Corman, 1960’s, Little Shop of Horrors, approached the burgeoning horror genre farcically, employing humor to tell the story of a florist’s assistant who begins feeding his plants human blood. Thanks to word-of-mouth, acclaim, and an appearance of young Jack Nicholson, Little Shop of Horrors became a cult hit. This led to various adaptations over the years, including a 1986 movie retelling, which served as the basis for the off-Broadway musical of the same name. Though only loosely based on Corman’s original film, the Little Shop of Horrors musical became a hit thanks to its musical selection of rock and roll, early Motown, and doo-wop.

Over the last several years, singer-songwriter Katie McTigue has steadily released songs under the name Pacing to a growing fanbase and increasing acclaim. Based in San Jose, McTigue started Pacing as a bedroom pop project, but it’s grown into something more. Delicate, sardonic yet sincere, with each song crafted in a tongue-in-cheek style that pokes fun but invites further reflection, Pacing’s music feels like the wind-down soundtrack to a night filled with adventure, like a bittersweet postcard to a time well spent with plenty of thoughtful musing to fill in the gaps of the late-night car ride home. Pacing will be celebrating the release of the new album Planet Fitness.

Since their inception in 2013, the Suicideboys have weathered accusations of style-jocking, copyright infringement and even Satanist leanings, only to come out on top, bigger than ever. But the stakes have always been real for the duo. They got their start and their group’s name after making a pact to kill themselves if their music career didn’t work out. Luckily for them and their legion of loyal fans, it did. Suicideboys bring a distinctly dark yet harmonious flavor to the modern rap game, layering machine-gun lyrical delivery over hypnotic beats. It’s both abrasive and addictive. Familiar but alien, the duo keeps refining their style year after year without showing any sign of slowing down. Even with newfound bouts of sobriety and turns toward Jesus on the new album.

Seeing the creative names of indie bands showing off their stuff can be an unexpected delight, and the upcoming show presented by Heavy Lemon at the Jade Cathay restaurant is no exception. Be it alternative rockers Later Alligator, Tacoma-based indie kids Hidden Driver, Tucson-born Yipee! or the other Tacoma-based band, Mini Golf Water Feature, there’s a veritable slush-pile of interesting bands with compelling sounds and equally enticing names coming to the South Bay for a night of friendship, rock and dim sum.
